Guidance to families and friends with loved ones in prison

With a further lockdown in place for England, here is some guidance for families and friends of those people in prison. There are different rules for Scotland and Wales.

Unfortunately, all prison visits in England are suspended, with the exception of compassionate grounds to be agreed in advance with the prison directly. Visits to children in Youth Custody Estates will continue.

With prison visits being suspended there are other ways in which you can keep in touch with your loved ones. You can;

  1. Leave a voice message on the Prisoner Voicemail Service.
  2. Send an email using the prisoner email service.
  3. Write to them at the prison address.

If you do have an urgent concern about someone in a prison you should contact the prison directly. Further information can be found on the Government website with links to the email a prisoner service.

SHU Law have a Prison Law and Criminal Appeals department and details on what our team can assist with can be found on our website. If you have any questions please feel free to email us at enquiries@shulaw.co.uk and a member of our team will be happy to help.
