If you’ve got a parking ticket, the first thing to do is to ascertain who it is from. Different rules apply for tickets from public officials (the police, local authorities) and private companies.
A ticket from a public official is called a Penalty Charge Notice. You should not ignore this type of ticket. There is very rarely any merit in not paying these types of fine.
A Parking Charge Notice, confusingly similar in name to a Penalty Charge Notice, is something different. This is from a company which is essentially charging you for services received. It’s like them issuing you with an invoice for parking on their land. Parking Charge Notices can be perfectly valid and justifiable, but they are not always.
Sometimes private parking companies end up taking court action against individuals, usually via the small claims court, for unpaid Parking Charge Notices. It can be stressful to have to deal with something like this without having any legal support.
