Meditation Training Event led by Melvin Lyons

A group of second year SHU Law students were given the great opportunity to attend an insightful Meditation Training Event, “Introduction to Mediation”. This event was led by Melvin Lyons, who came on behalf of Mediation Sheffield Community Cohesion Service (MESH). Melvin is a seasoned mediator with a background of previous experience working in a Northern Ireland Law Centre.

The session began with Melvin explaining to the students his background and experience in Northern Ireland working as a mediator. He then went on to give the students a detailed presentation on the different types of Dispute Resolution, breaking down examples of Alternative Disputes Resolutions, Statutory, Institutional and Legal Resolutions. To consolidate what the students had just learnt, in small groups the students were given a case study to breakdown To finish off the session, the students were shown a video of a mock-up mediation session which gave them a great visualisation and understanding of the typical process of a mediation session.

The event was very well received with engagement from the students throughout the workshop. Upon successful completion of the workshop, the students were awarded with certificates which will look great on their CVs highlighting the invaluable skills they obtained from the session.

We are greatly thankful and privileged for Melvin taking the time to do this.
